Many Many People ask the history of Mt Haven
Resort and the Filone family when they visit us and they realize that
we have been successfully running this establishment officially since
1973 and unofficially previous to that, as a well kept secret for
just close friends and family, since 1966.
The year was 1966 and three brothers --Tony the eldest and John
and Andy (twins) from Long Island City, Queens NY and their wives
Angela, Lorraine and Tina respectively, decided to take a little
trip up to the Poconos to check out what everyone was referring
to as the new place to get away from it all. Only 75
miles from their home in NYC they thought it may just be that perfect
place to have summers and weekends outside of the city and maybe
eventually a nice peaceful place to raise a family.
Their ultimate destination was Gold Key Lake
about 4 miles
up on Log Tavern Rd
to view some land where a summer home might
possibly be built. They never made it that far. Before they were
even a mile up on Log Tavern Road they were overcome with the beautiful
wide open spaces and marveled at the pristine area filled with little
lakes and streams and then
there it was
a FOR SALE sign
at the top of the road with a smaller sign that said Hintenbergers,
Mt. Haven They decided to drive down the long road and found
a woman sitting on a porch who began to tell of the wonderful times
her family had experienced on the property for her whole life and
the 5 small housekeeping cottages that had accommodated friends
and family for as long as she could remember. She had lost most
of her family and the rest were no longer interested in the upkeep
on the property. That was all the brothers needed to hear
the
property was theirs within the next few months and for the first
few years Filones Mt Haven was filled with Family
and friends and weekends and long lazy summers of eating, game playing
(jeopardy and pantomime quiz were favorites
) and relaxing by the spring fed pool.
The family started to realize that if they were having such a good
time maybe it was time to open officially for business and put in
a restaurant and more lodging. The brothers had been successfully
running restaurants and clubs in New York and had decided what better
place to bring their expertise. Build it and they will come
and
boy did they ever. The grand opening coincided with a tremendous
building boom in Pike County that brought many people to the area.
Mt Haven was open for business and there was 3 hour wait on the
weekends to get into the dining room. They seemed to have found
the formula that worked for the areas patrons. Great Traditional
Italian food, Nice sized portions and Reasonable prices. Never let
them leave hungry was Tonys philosophy
Mt Haven and the Filone Family continued to grow and grow as the
years went on and they adjusted to the areas changing landscape
while continuing their philosophy of Great Service Great Food
Great Prices. The rooms (there are now 33) stayed full and
the dining room stayed busy. As the years went on younger generations
of Filones came on board and took over in their areas of expertise.
Anthony(Johns Son) and Andrea (Andys daughter) are bringing
the catering, rooms and property into the 21st century while continuing
to find new ways to be innovative and still make customers feel
like part of the family. The staff (most of them have been with
us for 10 plus years and many for 20 and even some for 25 years)
are dedicated to the customer and your complete experience here
at Mt Haven.
In 2003 we lost Tony to a kidney ailment but in his memory we continue
to grow. There was no limit to what Tony would do for a customer
and today we feel the same way.
We realize as a family that in todays market you have a lot
of options for your vacation getaway, your family party, your wedding
or just simply your Saturday night out on the town
we respect
that and thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to make
it special for you and treat you as part of our family.
We look forward to seeing you again and again and making your memories
part of our history.

My husband and I stayed at the Mt Haven resort in the poconos and
I would have to say that we did it for the best price. Our package
included 3 meals a day and a private cottage for only $175 a night,
but that wasn't the best part. On our anniversary day we decided
to have a picnic lunch which the staff put together for us at no
charge. We found a beautiful little spot in a park and put up our
pop-up tent. When we opened our picinic basket imagine our surprise
when we found caesar salad, fresh fruit, 2 huge italian sandwiches
and then for dessert tiramasu and chocolate dipped strawberries.
It will be an anniversary I will always treasure.

My husband and I stayed in a villa at Mt. Haven - the food was fabulous,
the prices were reasonable, and the room was awesome. It was everything
we were told it would be and then some. Cleanliness was awesome.
Furthermore, the staff were all friendly as well as the owners of
the property. Usually when you get an "all inclusive"
including meals, the meals are pick and choose, but if was any entree
on the menu...and the peace and quiet was awesome.
We definitely will tell our friends, and I would recommend it highly...and
I like that it is family owned and has been for 40 years...
